Personal Retreat - Update!

Yesterday, my amazing husband took the day off of work so I could go on my very own personal retreat. I was clueless about where to go until I saw the weather forecast: 60+ degress and sunny in November?! I knew exactly where I would go. A nearby park that I love has many nooks and crannies off the beaten path where you can feel semi-secluded in the midst of God's beautiful creation.

I was originally headed for the gazebo that is peeking over the hill. It overlooks a pond filled with ducks and giant-sized koi, but it tends to be a high traffic area. Instead I opted for the lonely bench on the quiet path to the side of the lake. I wanted a peaceful surrounding where I could really focus on the Lord.

I brought my Bible, my iPod filled with worship music, my journal, and my worksheet. I began by praying and listening to a few worship songs (Shane and Shane) to prepare my heart. Then I dove right in and began to reflect upon this season of my life, the priorities I should be focusing on, the people I need to minister to, and the distractions that I need to rid myself of to make time for the Lord and my current ministries.

Sometimes the Lord would bring Scripture to mind, and I would stop journaling to read. I spent time in Romans 8 and Proverbs 31. At other times, I listened to some more songs and just let my heart worship Him.

It was a wonderfully refreshing time with the Lord and away from my usual routine. The Lord confirmed a lot of what I already know He wants me to do. It was a very sweet time, and I'd like to schedule a few personal retreats each year.

I'm excited about the journey the Lord is leading me on. He is so faithful to guide us if we ask. How neat is that tree stump that resembles a chair? Of course, it made me think of His throne. I'm so thankful for the throne of grace that God sits upon. I know that I can always receive help in my time of need. Because of Christ's redeeming work in my life, I can approach the throne with confidence. (Hebrews 4:16)

Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path. (Psalm 119:105)

But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. (Matthew 6:33)

P.S.

It was no small sacrifice for Matt to take care of the girls for the few hours I was away. He was so brave to take them to BJ's and Target all in one morning. I would never have attempted such a feat. And when I got home, the look on his face said it all. I have worn that same expression many times. It was the look of a man who had been physically and emotionally worn down by two cute little monsters. And the house? Well, it had been in a war of its own. :) I have to admit that my heart smiled at the sight of it all. The Moms reading this know exactly what I'm talking about. There's something so validating about seeing your weary husband after a hard day with the kids. (That sounds evil, but you know it's true!) He is the most amazing husband and father, and I'm very blessed to walk this journey with him by my side. Love you hunny!

Did you take your camera too?

Being close to God's creation does make us feel near to Him.

Oh yes! I forgot to mention my camera. :)

This is so good to hear. I am a big fan of personal retreats!! They are so important, especially for mommies of young children and/or home-schooling mommies who don't have down time. Solid, uninterrupted time in the Word is so refreshing to the soul! And I also love the pics. Very nice.

I was going to say you iPod takes really great pictures, if you didn't take a camera. Did you touch up the photos at all or do you have a really good camera?

Sorry, I know the post is on your retreat. It is great to have time to think and listen to God - isn't it? It is hard to think with the commotion in my house. I usually lock myself in my bedroom with agenda to go over with God.

Hi Karen,
Yes, it was very refreshing. :)

About the pics - yes to both questions. I'm using a dSLR and I did some minor touch ups to saturate the colors a little more. :) Thanks for the compliment! I'm starting to really love photography.

About This Blog

Think of a shoebox full of letters brimming to the top with a lifetime of memories. How priceless and sentimental! Our blog was created with that idea in mind. We want to etch the ever changing moments of our lives into a place where they'll never fade. We want to leave a legacy of faith, and the events that shaped them, for our children and perhaps our childrens' children. The number "1" in Priority 1 Mail has meaning and significance. It refers to Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. We pray that the letters we write will reflect Him, our #1 priority.
